Classes

Iron Octopus Intensive:
10-12 week course designed to teach the basics of minimalist, hardstyle kettlebell training. Programming and instruction included. There is no other course like it in Perth. Learn the basics of hardstyle kettlebell training and follow a program centered around the single arm military press, the swing and the squat. You haven't practiced this way before. Trust us. Taught with military precision and attention to detail, the only way to truly squeeze all the value out of a minimalist program is with brutal, yet mindful practice.

Lucky Dip Session: You could be wrestling, you could be learning self defence, you could be swinging a kettlebell, you could be maxing out your deadlift, you coud be learning submission defence, you could be doing airbike intervals. The fitness gods channel their will through coach and their will be done. Physical culture is about the practice of strength and skills for the sake of it. For health and vitality, not necessarily for any specific performance standard.

Brazillian Jiu Jitsu (GI): Brazillian Jiu Jitsu quickly became one of the most popular martial arts world wide after the first UFC events where we saw BJJ practitioner Royce Gracie defeat opponents of all sizes (many larger than him) and from all different disciplnes. In the modern MMA game, BJJ knowledge is essential, or you will easily be submitted. The art centres around the concept of "control leading to submission". "Control" describes how you remove your opponents athleticism and ability to move freely, tiring them out. "Submission" refers to the application of a  strangle/choke hold or joint lock, where your opponent will either verbally submit to you or "tap out". Refusual to submit would result in unconsciousness or broken limbs. Or both.

Submission Grappling: BJJ is not an art without its flaws. The submission grappling class could be called "NOGI" BJJ however many of the techniques, tactics and ideas used in Sambo, catch wrestling, freestyle wrestling, judo, MMA and other grappling arts would be taboo, discourteuos or even illegal in BJJ competition. This class is for the competitive grappler (of all levels) that wishes to compete or simply be effective in any ruleset of submission grappling.

Combative Grappling: In this class we dissect a video of a police officer or security guard or paramedic or any other first responder being overwhelmed by a non-compliant person, and reverse engineer the situation to tease out and learn how to control and affect an arrest, gain compliancy, or defend onself in the context of carrying out your duty. Police are not trained well enough in close, unarmed combat, depsite it being a large part of their job. Learn to be less dependant on your spray and firearms, and learn the concpets and principles of control leading to compliancy in accordance with WAPOL policy and current state law. There is no other class like this in Perth, and there is no other instructor as experienced in the application of force in this context that hasn't privatised with their own "system" and courses.

Fighter Strength & Conditioning: Invite only. This is not for begginners. you will find profesional, sometimes amatuer MMA fighters and grapplers in this class practicing the skill of strength to be 1% stronger than their opponents. Programmed by Alex Torres himself, this class has seen considerable strength, mobility and movement gains for high calibre athletes.

Group Strength Practice: For all strength and fitness levels. Practice the skill of strength and/or participate in some HIIT or boot camp style circuit training in a tight nit group of men. Not designed with any specific goal in mind over the long term, however each session will have a specific focus and you will see improvements in overall strength, mobility, work capacity and functionality.

Man Sesh: This class is free and any man is welcome to join in. If you only come once a week, you could make it this class and never pay a dollar. It is where men get together early on a Saturday morning, talk some shit, get sweaty, provide support and network. We always finish with deliberate cold exposure AKA an ice bath. If it's your first time, you're having an ice bath. Simple.

Iron Squids:

New Class starting Xmas school holidays.

There is a blaring deficiency in the physical education of our youth. As a father of 2 children, each in pre-primary and primary school respectively, I have seen and met many children at pre primary, primary and even high school age that do not possess the physical aptitude to perform basic human movements like a squat, or hinge or crawl. Movements I know they could perform as younger toddlers, as we all did, but have already lost. If they are to continue down this road, we condemn them to a lifetime of playing catch up with their bodies. Exactly like you are now (most likely). We must teach them the joy of physical freedom, for it is not something restricted to only the youthful.

“But they do sport and physical education at school” I hear you retort. Well yeah, they do. But I’ll be damned if I know what they do with that time. Playing watered down ball sports and running “cross country” does not equate to using and learning the skill of strength and body mechanics. There wasn’t even 1 single legitimate field event at the last “sports carnival” I attended.

In the Iron Squids class, I teach children ages 6-14 the skill of strength. Once they know how to practice this skill, it will serve them for life. I will teach safe and effective biomechanics for basic movements like the squat, lunge, gait, hinge, twist and breathing. All while having a blast. I will improve your child’s “physical IQ”, working on proprioception, balance and strength using games, gymnastics, kettlebells, and wrestling. The kids will also be trained in self defence and anti-bullying. We will raise brave, physically and mentally tough leaders who can protect themselves and the weak, as well as maintain their composure in stressfull situations. The Iron Squids class will be the reason your child picks up seamlessly and can play any sport they wish in their future as the skills I bestow upon them are transferable to most every aspect of life.
